Meals on Kilimanjaro Climb

What you eat while climbing Kilimanjaro is vitally important. That is why we prepare nutritious, hearty and varied meals for the climbers of Kilimanjaro. We also provide snacks, hot drinks and drinking water.

Climbing Kilimanjaro is a huge challenge, so you need to nourish your legs properly to succeed. No one gets to Uhuru Peak – the top of the mountain – on peanut butter sandwiches alone!

We know that nutritious and tasty food can change the way you climb, mentally, physically and even emotionally. For this reason, the food fed to our Kilimanjaro customers is a top priority for ShineLand Safari. We want to feed you the food that your body needs to get excited at every meal, and then recharge with energy for the climb!

The importance of food and water at high altitude

Food and water, while always vital, are especially important to the body when we are at altitude. Did you actually know that water can help relieve the symptoms of altitude sickness? Altitude sickness or acute mountain sickness (AMS) is a disease that affects many people when they ascend to an altitude of 3000 m above sea level. Given that you’ve climbed the 5,895m Uhuru Peak on Kilimanjaro, there’s a good chance that AMS can affect you!

It is perfectly normal for someone to lose a little appetite at higher altitudes. Did you actually know that high altitude increases your metabolism while suppressing your appetite? This means that at meals, high on the mountain, you have to eat more than you feel inclined to. It is important to eat enough to have enough energy for the demanding climb.
